SOMALIS: THE FORGOTTEN VICTIMS OF THE TSUNAMI

On behalf of the Somali Canadian community, our deepest sympathies go out to all the Tsunami victims from around the world. We appreciate all the help and support the citizens of the globe has shown in response to this devastating natural disaster. We are particularly thankful to our fellow Canadians and our Canadian government for the deep generosity shown to help these victims.

As we all have seen on the media, this tsunami has caused disproportionate destructions in Asia and in Africa . The tsunami waves have wiped out entire villages and have destroyed many lives. One of those areas the Tsunami devastated is Somalia's Indian Ocean coast. More than 200 people have lost their lives and many more are still missing. Close to 50, 000 people have become homeless.

The United Nations has warned about potential outbreak of cholera and other diseases in these areas. An estimated 30, 000 to 50,000 are in need of immediate relief and assistance in Somalia. So far not much relief has reached these victims in Somalia, except 30 tons of food by the World Food Program. The WFP has actually diverted this small food from its original destinations of Asia for that clearly shows how desperate the situation has become for the Somali victims.

Jan Egeland, the UNs Emergency Relief Coordinator was quoted as saying: Somalia has largely been forgotten by the international community in its response to help victims of the Tsunami. Somalis in the Diaspora are organizing a relief fund for these forgotten victims of the Tsunami in Somalia . Canadian Friends of Somalia, a Somali organization based in the city of Ottawa , is collecting funds for the Somali victims of the tsunami. The funds collected will be administered by Oxfam Canada.

There will be a fundraising dinner on Saturday January 8th, 2005 at Jim Durrel, at 1265 Walkley Rd , 5:00 PM. We are kindly asking Canadians not to neglect the Tsunami victims in Somalia . We urge our Canadian Government and Canadian NGOs to help the Tsunami victims relief efforts in Africa , specially those hard hit areas in Somalia .
